Weighing in at the tourney |
February 19, 2011.... For the last couple weeks I have been
fishing Lake Don Pedro
for black bass.
I was pre-fishing for last weekends Nor-Cal Bass team event held there.
I started off fishing the upper part of the lake at Moccasin. The
water was a little lower than I liked but
Carl Wagner, my
partner, scored one over 3 pounds in 12 feet of water on a senko. I had
heard there was a bite there but I couldn't find it as I searched for
them from 15 to 50 feet with no luck.
Carl and I then headed to Woods Creek and found several nice 3 pound
plus fish all shallow in 15 to 20 feet of water.
The next day Carl and I headed to Blue oaks and ran to Rogers Creek
Arm. It was tough in the morning, but the evening bite was on and all
the fish were shallow in 15 to 20 feet of water.
On one 50 foot section of bank I made 10 casts with my dart head and
6" Wright Bait WB001R worm and caught 10 bass all in the 2 pound class.
Carl said, "boy did I get a lesson on how those dartheads work!"
Carl threw a dart head setup and caught a fish and then switched back
to his drop shot style of fishing. Carl prefers that style of bass.
Carl went one day without me and fished the Ramos area and caught 4
in the 4 to 4 1/2 pound class all on tubes.
The day of the tournament Carl said, "well where do you want to
fish." Did I want to run all the way to Woods and lose about 45 minutes
of fishing time or run to Ramos and Rogers. Left side of my brain was
hollering go to Woods as the fish average is better there. My right
side was saying well you have caught a few 3 pounders and one over 5 in
Rogers and Carl has caught several nice ones in Ramos Creek area. Lets
give that a shot as we save gas and fishing time.
Carl and I headed into Rogers and Carl quickly put
three fish in the
boat while I did my usual miss a fish routine. Seems I get to wound up
on tournament day and it takes a while to settle down.
I made a couple moves and we quickly had a limit of fish in the boat.
Our smallest was 1.3 pounds. Made a move to Ramos and caught a couple
1.3 pound bass that didn't help. Made a move back to Rogers and could
not find the fish I had been on. I finally started fishing in 50 to 60
feet of water and there they were. Darn bass had got off the bank and
went deep as soon as the sun had hit the water. I nailed a few more fish
that weighed 1.3 pounds.
I couldn't understand what had happened, during pre-fish I always had
a couple fish that weighed 3 pounds plus and one over 5 and now I
couldn't catch anything over 2 pounds.
I saw lots of nice bass weighed in at he bump table weigh-in. There
were spotted bass, largemouth bass, mulie's, smallie's and other
crossbreed bass that I have no idea what they were crossed with.

Tournament Champions |
I soon found out that I was not the only fisherman who had been on
nice black bass pre-fishing who could not find them. Anthony Pimentel
had several nice bass pictures on his phone that he had caught that were
in the 5 pound class. Art Romero showed me a picture of a 7 pound
spotted bass along with a 13 pound largemouth bass that he had caught
on Thursday,
neither of these bass fishermen came in with a kicker fish either so I
didn't feel to bad.
I reminded Carl on the way home what I had told him before we started
fishing Nor-Cal bass's team tournament this year. I had said "we may not
make any money but we are going to have a good time fishing!"
