BIG FISH & LOTS OF WATER
AWAIT YOU AT CAMANCHE!
By: Ron Wilson
March 23, 2010....
Lake Camanche is not only looking great with the water rising
daily but the fishing has also
been great.
Last week Norval Pimentel and I
pre-fished the lake for
black bass for a Nor-Cal
Bass tournament
that was held there Saturday.
We started in the main lake hitting
points and coves. Norval stuck with his tube baits while I used about
everything but the kitchen sink to try to catch a fish. Swim baits,
tubes, worms, pig and jig and a rip bait or two with not a single bite.
Norval boated a nice spot in the 2 pound plus class in the back of Hat
island.
Next stop was at dike 3 near the dam for
nada. Next move was along the rocks heading back upriver. In the first
rock cove I nailed a 2 pound plus spot when I went to my dart head style
of fishing with a Wright 6 inch worm and in the next cove Norval boated
a largemouth black bass
close to 5 pounds.
We moved around the lake hitting areas
looking for fish. I suggested an area near the Camanche Hills Gun Club
but Norval said he had a couple nice schools of largemouth bass already
located in that area so we continued working our way upriver.
We worked our way through the rock piles
all the way up to the bridge locating fish. Some areas the fish were in
the two pound class and in others we would locate fish in the 3 and 4
pound class. Fish that he would need Saturday in order to win the
Tournament.
On
Saturday Grandpa Norval and his son Anthony placed second in the
event with 17.88 pounds. They never got that big bite they needed all
day long. Jason Remmers and Jeff Frey won the event with 5 fish that
weighed 23.36 pounds and they had a 7.38 pound bucket mouth to help them
break away from the rest of the pack.
On Saturday while grandpa Norval was out
chasing bass Mike Monschein of Monschein Industries in Riverbank and I
were out chasing trout.
I had been there the day before with
Guide Bruce Hamby to catch a limit of trout and it was slow for us but
we were trying all kinds of different lures to see if we could find that
hot bait. You know the one where you have to keep it hid in your hands
so the fish don't jump in the boat after it when they see it!
We never did find the bait but we had
success on blue/silver and brass/perch and a couple other Ex-Cel Lures
to catch a limit on but not that magic lure we were looking for.
On Saturday Mike and I headed to
Hat Island looking
for a big trout. Bruce and I had trolled over the river channel so I
chose to guide Mikes boat in the shallows close to hat Island and then
head in toward the dam.
We only picked up one in the shallows on
a long line 12 feet deep 120 feet behind the boat on a blue/silver
Ex-Cel. We went over lots
of fish according to the depth
finder but none that wanted to eat what we were trolling.
When we got to the buoy line near the dam
we had a double, one on a long line and the other at 20 feet OTW on a
blue /silver lure behind a Vance's silver/gold ball troll.
Mike and I struggled and caught fish here
and there but the wind made it real hard to hold the speed and angle
that we needed in order to present the lure to the fish just right. We
left the lake early to take care of previous obligations.
