WORK & PLAY CAN GO
TOGETHER
By: Ron Wilson
May 9, 2006.... Saturday was another good
fishing day, but unfortunately as president of a private fishing club
there is things that need to be taken care of before any fishing could
be done.
The long rainy season caused a lot of
thistles to grow in our parking lot so spraying was in order before they
got knee high to a giraffe. Also several boats had blown free and were
dotted around the lake and full of rain water. I had to get the water
out of them and back were they belonged. With mosquito season here I
didn't want to leave them a place to spawn.
After the work was done my son Ronald and
I did a little fishing. Senko's were working. Both cinnamon and smoke
were catching fish.
Ronald boated the biggest, one in the 6
pound class, but I had the biggest one on! She was in the 10 pound class
but broke my 12 pound test line on a hot run down a path between the
weeds! She sure was a chunk as I had her up close to the top before she
decided she was tired of playing.
24 fish for me and 16 for Ronald not a
bad day and we got a lot of work done.
Sunday
Ken Moore of Ripon and I fished Lake Camanche. We arrived at 6 a.m. and
by 6:30 we were at the dam
trolling for trout.
I had on a variety of Ex-Cel Lures. The
first hit was on a red/gold Ex-Cel with a dodger 20 feet deep about 75
feet behind the boat. In the next ½ mile we had three hits on the one
lure and I could not find another lure they would hit. The depth finder
told me the fish were all 15 to 30 feet deep.
I pulled the lure out that was getting
bit and turned the hook point like a shy wash hook. The next hit
resulted in a 2 pound trout. I thought I had the pattern down but I
couldn't get another bite even though I was dragging 4 lures through the
fish. I tried all kinds of lures and finally figured out that the baits
should be at least 150 feet behind the boat.
I wanted to do a little prefishing for an
upcoming bass tournament so around noon I switched to plastics. We
fished around the dikes and island tops and then the rock piles upriver.
The bass were on the bite! By 3 p.m. I had
a limit of spots to take home and Ken had a couple so that we ended the
day with a nice bag of fillets for dinner.
We cleaned the fish and talked to another
angler who said he had fished all day trolling for trout and never
caught a single fish. That made me feel a little better but I was still
upset with myself for not figuring out how the fish wanted the bait
presented.
During the weekend mother nature and her
animals were out in force. Jet skiers, skiers, pleasure boat riders and
even a cigar boat was on the water enjoy the summer weather. Mother
natures little critters was out and about feeding also so I snapped a
few pictures. |
