WET & WILD WEEKEND!
By: Ron Wilson
April 19, 2006.... Saturday was another
good fishing day, that makes three Saturdays in a row! Considering all
the bad weather we have been having I consider three good fishing days
an awesome number.
I fished a private fishing club both days
this past weekend. I took my cousin Dave, who has ALS, and is slowly
going downhill.
He is starting to have trouble reeling in
fish so I have devised a rubber ball with a slit in it for the reel
handle so he can grip the handle better. Hope that does the job for him.
So far I have a 6 foot ramp that goes on
the boat and a launch ramp so he can use his walker to get to the back
seat of the aluminum bass tracker. Once there he stays until the end of
he day. Then I back the trailer in and drive the boat on the trailer,
lock it down, take it out of the water with Dave still in the seat. I
then help him slide off the seat onto the boat deck then grab him in a
fireman's carry and stand him on the ground and hand him his walker so
he can get into the front seat of the truck.
With a little thought you can take a
handicap person fishing without to much trouble. I think that's how my
duck hunting partners feel about me at times!
We arrived Saturday at the pond at 7 a.m.
and launched and caught a few fish and then at 9 a.m. the fish
completely stopped biting for us!
Around noon the bite started again and we
had a ball catching bass up to 8 pounds. I get a kick out of
watching Dave as anytime a fish over 3 pounds gets on the line, its a
tug of war until either he gets the fish to the boat or it gets in the
grass and shakes the hook loose. He has almost no hook setting power so
they either set the hook themselves or hold onto the bait until they get
tired and let it go!
The bait of choice Saturday was a smoke
senko with large flake.
Sunday my son Ronald and I went back to
the pond at noon. It rained cats and dogs and then hailed some with 20
to 40 mile and hour winds. When it slowed a little we went fishing from
the bank for a cast or two before the rain would run us back to safety
of the truck.
At 3 p.m. I suited up with raingear and
we headed out fishing the bank. The bite was a great one with bass left
and right. My best 5 was one in the 10 pound class, an eight and three
over 5. Twenty-one fish in a couple hours of fishing and then rain
stopped, the sun came out and the fish went off the bite.
Ronald caught 9 bass, a large crappy and
missed 2 hawgs! One broke his 15 pound test line and then he thought he
was hung on moss and pulled the other up to the top of the water before
she spit the bait at him! Sure was funny to watch. Great way to spend an
Easter, catching bass.
At 7 p.m. my wife gave me a dozen plastic
goodie filled Easter Eggs to hide in the house, nope not for the
grandkids as they weren't there, I hide them and then Diana opened the
back door and announced to our dogs that it was Easter Egg hunting time.
In a few minutes the dogs had found them
and we opened them up and gave them the treats, then put the dogs

outside!
We counted the eggs but one was missing.
So I told Diana to let Peggy back in. I told her to find the Easter Egg.
She went right to Diana and pointed. I said the egg is probably under
your recliner. She got up and sure enough there was the final egg.
Now I just have to find some plastic
Easter Eggs big enough to hide my game birds in when I go hunting. Maybe
then Peggy can find them!
On a separate note club member Ron Fisher
nailed a monster in the 10 pound class a couple weeks ago! His biggest
bass yet! |
