THE FALL ROUNDUP IN FULL
SWING
By: Ron Wilson
October 31, 2005....
For the last 3 weeks it's been hunting,
hunting and more hunting!

The highlight for me has been my
grandson shooting a 5x5 bull elk on the Wilson property outside of
Cokeville, Wyoming.
There were about 20 cows coming down
a hill and the bull was near the rear of the herd. He got in position and
waited for the bull to finally get down the hill. He had to have his heart
pumping furiously!
He shot the bull a few inches low and
they had to track him down by following the blood trail to where he went
in order to finish him off!
He is having a banner year with a little forky in
California, the elk in Wyoming and he is now back home in time to try for
another deer locally before he starts his duck and goose hunting.
I know that one should not spoil ones dog but I have
done it to all of the ones I have owned so I guess I can’t blame my son
Donald to much for spoiling my grandson rotten! I will take the fifth
about any help I may have contributed!
I took my cousin Dave Wilson up on private property
near Sheep Ranch and he passed up on shooting a little forked horn buck
and then a three pointer. These two bucks and about a dozen does and fawns
were all located on one small hill. We never saw another deer anywhere!
We visited some of his old friends and hunted their
property and after the day was over it was quite apparent to me that his
main goal was just to get out sightseeing the game and looking over the
countryside where he has spent so many years. The ALS he has is slowing
taking over his motor skills and he now walks with help and must have a
big backup (me) when he shoots his favorite game, gray squirrels.
Gray
squirrels are plentiful in the area as there is a good acorn crop this
year, it amazing at how fast they climb trees and then jump from tree limb
to tree limb making there escape. Its really hard for Dave to get a shot
at one anymore!
A lot of hunters are complaining about lack of deer
to shoot this year, well you can’t shoot them twice, its not like catch
and release bass fishing once they are shot they are dead and they don’t
come back to life to be shot again!
Last year everyone who took a gun to the woods that
knew what they were doing in hunting deer and knew how to shoot killed a
deer!
The duck opener was real good and those in the right
spots had a great shoot and those who were not just watched from the
outside of the good areas wishing they had that good duck spot to hunt!
Lots of birds in the Newman, Gustine, Merced and Los
Banos areas and the local reservoirs. My reports said that some clubs just
didn’t get the action while others limited out and then took out older
hunters for some noon
shooting with success!
You can look for the good opener to start slowing up
as the birds get wiser and the locals get shot out!
Just like deer hunting what a duck or goose hunter
usually needs to be successful is weather, wind, rain, etc. It all helps
move Mother Natures bounty around so that those sportsmen who brave it can
be more successful doing those times! |
