NICE WEATHER SENDS ME
BACK TO THE POND
By: Ron Wilson
December 8, 2005.... With the lack of rain
this year and the great fishing weather anglers have been scoring on 2
to 5 pound trout regularly at all the lakes.
The reason is the lakes have turned over
and the large rainbows went on a feeding frenzy. Chucker-T at Don Pedro,
Kurt Warner at McClure and several local bankies around the 49 bridge at
New Melones along with some of the locals favorite ponds at Camanche Lake.
I did a little bass fishing with my cousin
Dave Wilson at a private fishing club on Thanksgiving day and scored big
time on nice size bass. The morning started a little slow with nothing
from the first pond but when I launched the boat and hit the 100 acre plus
main lake, the action started.
It was a slow pick with a nice 3 pounder
every now and then and then Dave hit one in the 8 pound class, I soon
followed that one with one over 7 and then we caught several more 2 to 4
pounders. The bite was on black & blue and brown & chartreuse Keeper
colored senko style baits.
I finally went down to 8 pound test and a
dart head using a 6 inch brown and chartreuse Keeper worm. I would shake
it through the moss in 10 to 15 feet of water. The bass were in the moss
and when I would snap the bait threw a clump of moss and let it fall the
bass would eat it.
The
other technique was to drag the senko weightless baits through the moss
and the bass would grab it on the fall as you dragged it over a clump of
moss.
At 3 p.m. I hooked a big fish that headed
for the bank! I put as much pressure on the 8 pound test line as I dared
and the big fish came to the top and just wallowed shaking its head from
side to side! I kept the pressure up as the fish made a couple nice runs
but did not bury itself in the moss! My heart pounded as she broke the
surface again near the boat with another wallowing move and then she came
to be lipped at the boat. A nice bass in the 10 pound class. A couple
quick pictures and then she was released!
Nothing like fishing a private pond where
you know the fish are there and all you have to do is find the bait they
want, present it to them and then the fight is on!
With the storm door finally open and the
rain coming down maybe the ducks and geese will finally start heading
south! So far this year its been pretty dismal for the waterfowl hunters
all over the central valley flyway! |
