THE SPAWN IS ON

By: Ron Wilson

Blaine with a huge pond lunker

April 21, 2005.... For the last month I have been fishing and checking the spawn in the private pond I belong to. I have been comparing it to our local lakes.

Since the water usually warms faster in ponds then lakes, the spawn usually starts earlier. But this year has been on again off again due to both rain and cold spells.

The bass in the lakes and at the pond have been on the beds on and off again as the weather changes. So far there has been two successful spawns in the ponds with the 3rd batch of bass now on the beds along with perch and crappie. I don't know about the lakes but it looks like the ponds will have a great spawn this year.

Last weekend I noticed two different sizes of bass fry, but the third spawn is going to be a little tougher to determine because there will be a mixed bag of perch, crappie and bass in this spawn.

What this will mean in the future of the pond only time will tell but I hope to observe it and see just how good the fishery can become with managed catch and take conditions.

Last weekend my son Donald, cousin Blaine and I observed the fish together both by eyeball and on rod and reel. The morning fishing was real tough. The reason was that the moon phase was not in tune for a morning bite.

Around noon the fish started getting active and feeding as the water got warmer and warmer and we were into some fair fishing. The post spawn bass were feeding and we managed 4 over 5 pounds. While this might sound great it was a far cry from my last two weekend trips were I had an 8 and 9 pounder one weekend and then a 10 pounder the next.

I got a nice one also!

As the bass finish their spawn, you can look for the lakes to get tough and the light line finesse fishermen should start seeing a good share of the action.

Trout at Melones, Camanche, Don Pedro, Beardsley and McClure are on the bite. Ex-Cel firetiger lure patterns seems to be working in all the lakes.

The salmon action has started in the ocean. You might want to start checking out the fishing reports to see what's happening there.

Sorry about not getting a better how to report, but I am studying a private fishing club pond and watching what's happening there to learn first hand about it and the fishery.

At the end of the month a delta report on black bass from a Nor-Cal Tournament and then in late May a first hand report on a weeks vacation at Lake Camanche and its fishery.

Then in early September if the lords willing I will be in Kodiak Island once again enjoying just a taste of what Alaska has to offer.
