Back to the Grind!

September 14, 2004.... Well after a couple
months of R&R from surgery, its back to the old grind at the Modesto Bee.
Had some tumors removed that luckily were benign, so everything is roses
at the present. Got to have a yearly checkup though!
While recovering I kept track of the goings
on with all my outdoors contacts. Here is what I have compiled to date.
The tuna are 55 miles out at the guide.
Don't know why but they just haven't came in that close to us this year.
The water is 66.5 degrees and the fishermen were catching Bonita, albacore
and even a dorado.
Striped Marlin have been spotted jumping
and lazing around. Mako Shark's have also wanted an albacore lunch and
have taken them right at the boat according to one skipper!
Lots of action out at the guide when the
weather cooperates.
The rock cod fishing in shallow water has
been the best in years. Would you believe some to 7 pounds. I haven't
heard of fish like that since I was a kid so I guess the closures are
helping the fishery.
The lingcod size limit is 30 inches and
there are scores of undersize fish out there according to anglers who play
catch, measure and release in the 28 to 29 inch class.
The salmon should be in the rivers hot and
heavy, but no large schools reported as of yet. Hot weather may have
something to do with this.
Locally the fishing has been so so, with
some hot bass bite for anglers in the know. Private ponds have been my
specialty lately with lots of 50 fish days with fish up to 7 pounds on
occasion.
There has been a hot black bass bite at
Clear Lake. Hundred fish days for some boats. Jigs and keeper 6 inch 082
worms and June bug ring worms are scoring. The key is to find the fish as
they are schooled up in certain areas all over the lake.
As I am back to work and doing some fishing
for reports my webmaster is off and running for a couple weeks on vacation
chasing those little green fish he loves so much!
The bad part is he holds the key to the
website so you will have to be patient until he returns for updated news
on fishing and hunting.
