BASS IN THE BOAT AND DUCKS ON THE BRAIN!

By: Ron Wilson

Blaine with a solid pond lunker!

October 7, 2004.... Ron Fisher called recently wanting a black bass fix as it has been a while since he has caught anything of any size.

Sunday I took him to a private pond that my cousin Blaine and I have been doing research on for the last few months.

I have been studying the heck out of them bass and feel like I should know some of them on a first name basis as well as some of their eating habits.

Last Sunday the fishing was steady all day and the key baits were brown and green. It didn’t make any difference whether it was a Senko or 6 inch worm they just wanted that color.

This was the first time they looked at this color since I introduced them to it a month ago. I will explain this later on in the year when I am done researching.

Ron’s biggest bass was a nice chunky Florida Bass over 5 pounds. Just guessing it could have been 6 easy as these fish are thick and healthy!

Blaine also hooked one over 6. I got to watch a beautiful black bass clear the water a couple times trying to throw the darthead worm before she buried up in the grass. I got my last look at the fish as she came out of the grass, shook her head and parted the line with her teeth.

These fish are healthy and strong!

We had a great day on the water catching and releasing 62 bass.

I hear the bass fishing at Clear Lake is still good and should continue to be so until Mother Nature messes it up!

Duck season is just around the corner and what it will be like is anybody’s guess. Last year was purported to be good, but it was a great disappointment for many hunters including yours truly.

With five mallards allowed in the bag and only one a hen, I look for our season to be about the same since we hunt mainly mallards.

The hunters in the grasslands, who have a better mixed bag of birds to shoot at, should fare somewhat better since they can bag 7 ducks a day once they arrive.

The goose hunters in the central valley have been rewarded with an extra honker to shoot at this year. I bet some high society people got tired of stepping in goose shit on their golf courses and complained loud enough to allow us an extra goose this year!

I was up at the local reservoir last week putting in a duck blind and it seems that almost all the local ducks and geese have been scared off the water. There was just one flock of ducks and a couple geese seen all morning.

Next week I will let you know how the duck and goose hunting is in Oregon as I am heading up there for the opener!
