PLENTY OF EXCITEMENT AND
LOT'S OF PAIN!
By: Ron Wilson
January 8, 2004.... New member of team
Autolife Outdoors, Tommy Lucas IV, 10 years old Of Modesto got his first
duck, a drake widgeon. Then after lunch, Tommy landed a 41-1/2 inch
striped bass!
What a weekend the Lucas clan had! One that
won't be forgotten in a long time and I wouldn't be surprised if Tommy the
4th decided to stay home and play computer games instead of going on the
next duck hunting outing!
What started off as a great morning turned
ugly when their lab dog decided to jump in the boat after they came back
from fishing and chomp down on an anchovy with a hook in it!
I guess the vets didn't know that fishing
hooks are designed to stay in. They gave the lab a shot to put him out for
10 minutes, however they didn't get the hook out in time! When the dog
came back around they had to quickly give the poor animal gas to keep him
out. I guess they vets weren't sports minded. Anyway the hook was finally
removed and everything came out just fine.
Early Sunday morning Tom II (senior),
Tommy's Grandpa, went out on the icy deck getting ready to go hunting and
slipped! The fall resulted in one broken ankle. Tommy IV had plenty of
excitement to observe on his first weekend at the duck club! Its one the
whole family won't forget in a long while!
I had heard the waterfowl had moved in the
Grizzly Island area but the Lucas's said "nope, the hadn't got there yet!"
It was hit and miss over the weekend. You
could be at one area and never get a shot and the guys a mile away would
pound the ducks.
Saturday the Gustine area was pretty slow
with some of the hunting clubs being lucky to bag a half dozen birds to
the club.
My son Donald and I had reservations for
San Luis Waterfowl area. We went to a teal hole and were rewarded with
lots of early morning action. We had limits of teal and pintail ducks by
about 8 a.m.
The teal were hard to hit as they were dive
bombing into the decoys. We had lots of first shot misses but ended up
bagging 3 teal with head shots. |
