LETS PUT MAN BACK ON TOP OF THE FOOD CHAIN!

By: Ron Wilson

January 15, 2004.... Man came to this continent and decided he could make it a better place to live then the Indians who lived here at the time. Since that time we have been altering mother nature in one way or another.

One of the latest alterations came when man decided to protect the Mountain Lion. He didn't think there were enough of them left in the state.

Whoever was in charge of counting how many Lions California had probably tried to count this nocturnal hunter during the day.

We have no idea just how many Mountain Lions live in California but we're finding out one thing for sure, when they're hungry they'll eat you!

We  protected a cat that is a natural killer and instinctively chases things that move, much like a well fed kitty cat attacks a mouse for the sport, with no intention of eating it.

Case in point, the Mountain Lion in southern California who had just eaten a good portion of a man it had killed, instinctively attacked a couple of women that happened by on bicycles. If it hadn't been for other cyclists in the area, the cat would of increased its kill ration to three for the day!

In my opinion, by protecting an animal like a 100 pound plus cat, you are teaching it to not be afraid of you. You then easily become its prey if it decides it wants you for a meal.

A good stealthy ambush and your dead meat! You generally won't know its coming until the cat has you by the head or neck getting ready to finish you off!

Mountain Lions have a hunting range of around 50 miles so you are not really safe anywhere if it becomes hungry!

While the latest killing was in southern California, in our area there have been sightings and  tracks of Mountain Lions in Ceres, Riverbank, Oakdale, Modesto and Waterford to name just a few towns that I know of.

Missing kids, who knows just how many have disappeared for lunch. I read where one youngsters remains were found in the woods under a pile of brush and debris, something that cats do in order to hide the remainder for later!

One child disappeared in the summertime from her bedroom when the window was left open. They found a bloody blanket a half mile away and no other clues to what happened, Could be Mountain Lions, but in this crazy world who knows.

Those family pets that suddenly disappear without a trace, you can bet they didn't leave on their own accord!

As the food supply dwindles and the Mountain Lion numbers peak you can bet that more humans will become a food source.

In my opinion all the Mountain Lions in California are not worth a single human life. We need to put MAN back at the top of this food chain and control the Mountain Lion population in whatever way is necessary to limit the threat.

Controlled hunting has my vote, no I don't want to volunteer even though I am not a cat lover of any type! I believe the domesticated cat plays a big part in the destruction of our songbirds and other small wildlife, but that's a whole other story.
