FINALLY STARTING TO FEEL
LIKE DUCK SEASON AROUND HERE
By: Ron Wilson
November 6, 2003.... The storm last week
finally brought the ducks down from up north. I spent Saturday
watching until well pass noon as flock after flock of ducks flew overhead.
Lots of Cans and other divers flying high.
I also saw flight after flight of snows heading south ahead of the next
storms that were stirring up north.
The mallards should be arriving from Tulle
Lake any day now as the next storm comes in!
My hunting buddies have been teaching me
their style of hunting. No pass shooting, if the birds don't commit with
set wings to the decoy spread then we just watch them.
I'm enjoying this style of hunting, in your
face knock 'em dead at 15 yards when they commit to the decoys.
We watched my my black Cocker Spaniel, Max,
do a triple retrieve on greenhead mallards. He hasn't hunted ducks in a
couple years. Last year I hunted Modesto reservoir where no dogs are
allowed on the water. What a stupid rule, let people swim and piss in the
reservoir but keep the animals out! Maybe they should take a good
look
at what all of mother nature's wildlife do in and around the lake.
When I got home I took one of the mallards
and threw it in the back yard to see what the new puppies would do. Or
should I say unplanned new puppies! I had Sierra, my Brittany Spaniel,
locked in a wire pen. Max decided to chew the bottom holding wires off the
fence to gain entry and another litter of puppies was the result!
Max is headed to the vet, that's one way I
know will work to outsmart him!
The puppies are definitely bird dogs one of
them grabbed the duck by the neck and drug it across the yard! Not an easy
task considering the duck was bigger than the pup! Hey anyone want a bird
dog?
Sunday Stratos Pro Staff Fishing Pro Norval
Pimentel, Tracy Boats General Manager Karen Hartung and I went to fish
Kelsey Bass Ranch.
The weather was breezy but very fishable
with a slight overcast. The bass weren't all that cooperative it seems
they had there heads stuck in the grass because of the cold front that was
heading our way.
Karen caught the first fish a nice bass
close to 3 pounds. We fished the whole lake but could only find a few
areas where some fish in the schools of bass wanted to eat. We would catch
3 or 4 fish and then have to find another school of fish that had some
fish that was actively feeding.
There must of been a 1,000 local honkers on
the lake. They sure were pretty to watch. These birds are all local home
grown honkers in the 10 to 18 pounds class. Our migratory honkers haven't
arrived yet!
Kelsey's is a great place to fish with the
solitude and Abundance of wildlife. its just a wonderful place to go veg
and Unwind for a few hours and the best part is that you can catch fish
while doing it.
Karen fished from the back of The boat and
caught around 10 bass while Norval and I Probably had 15 or so each. It is
tough fishing 3rd in the back of a bass boat but Karen held up her end of
the boat pretty well!
Sorry about not being able to tell you more
about what I am doing waterfowl hunting but my partners would just as soon
I kept there names and what we are doing to ourselves. However, I will try
to give you some tidbits now and then! |
