DEALING WITH HOLIDAY
WEEKENDS
By: Ron Wilson
July 10, 2003.... Friday was a planned
outing at Lake Don Pedro to see if all the trout and kokanee catching
stories I've been hearing were true. Unfortunately it will be a while before I
find out since my guest cancelled out at the last minute!
Not wanting to face the holiday weekend
traffic alone I decided to stay home and do a few honey do's that were
long overdue. Projects like mowing the yard, front and back and cleaning
the garage. However, this is not my idea of having a bang up 4th of July!
I didn't feel like fighting them but
guide, Bruce Hamby, braved the crowd on Sunday with a couple clients who
wanted to fish Lake Camanche.
Bruce's first client showed up at 5:30
a.m. and by 8 a.m. they had caught and released a limit of fish. Bruce
had
to meet his other client at south shore at 8 a.m. Seems he had a little
party to attend and needed the late arrival time to get some shuteye!
While at south shore Bruce bought a
fire-tiger-pattern R-lure. He only had a couple Ex-Cel fire-tiger lures
left, and it was catching fish. Bruce had tried all the old faithful
lures, blue/gold and ladybug but the fish just didn't seem to want them.
But they couldn't resist from chomping on the Ex-Cel fire-tigers. The
clients all ended up with nice fish in the 3 to 4 pound class with full
tails!
That R-Lure never put a fish in the boat.
I know it looks good, but evidently they didn't want anything to do with
it!
The trout at Camanche can be picky. We've
nailed them this year on 3 different Ex-Cel lures, blue/gold,
ladybug and now the fire-tiger. The fire-tiger pattern seems to be the
hot lure to use right now. They're keying on the action of the Ex-Cel
lure and the water clarity seems to be the reason they want fire-tiger.
I know it works, so you better have one on and you better be fishing it
at 50 feet!
Somehow I survived a 3 day holiday
without wetting a line and it didn't kill me. However I'm starting to
get the shakes and I know by this weekend I'll have to get a fishing
fix! Until next week, tight lines.
